A working list of New Zealand grants relevant to creating new Indian Living Paintings for the Aotea Centre Diwali Festival, ordered by opening date and read against one hard deadline.
No individual-applicant grant with a confirmed timeline pays out before Diwali. Every Creative NZ round returns results between 28 October and 9 December. The only realistic pre-festival money sits with the always-open, rolling-decision funders, and all three of those need a partner entity.
Bars run from application open to close. Circles mark the decision date. The pink line is the festival.
These three are always open and decide on a rolling basis, typically four to eight weeks. A decision needs to land by mid September to be worth anything: money arriving in late October cannot pay for work shown on the 30th.
No fixed cap · $10,000/yr if no legal entity
Decisions roughly monthly, twelve weeks at worst. Diwali sits squarely inside its purpose, which makes it the strongest fit on merit as well as timing.
Needs a group or entityUp to $25,000
Around two months to a decision. Submitted immediately, that lands late September or early October. Cutting it fine but not impossible.
Needs charity statusVaries by trust
Lion Foundation, NZCT and Pub Charity all run rolling rounds with roughly monthly decisions. Amounts and appetite differ, so worth spreading across several.
Needs incorporated entityThe catch: all three require a partner organisation to hold the grant, which adds a week or two before you can even submit. Auckland Indian Association or the New Zealand Indian Central Association are the obvious approaches, and that conversation is the actual first task.
Amounts are maximums unless stated. Anything marked unconfirmed could not be verified as running this year.

For this Diwali: the Ethnic Communities Development Fund is the best shot, and only if a partner entity is locked in immediately. For everything else: treat these rounds as funding the 2027 Diwali or the Chinese Lantern Festival, and apply to Creative Impact and Creative Fellowship in September on that basis.
